a weekend in the city

i'm in love.
i'm genuinely in love.

i know it's cliche and i know i say it far too often but oh my lands: the city that never sleeps has my heart.

day one | travelling & browsing

top (not shown): gap / legging: old navy / shoe: keds
sunglass: jcrew (similar) / jacket: target / jewelry (assortment): forever21

*not shown: innate and overwhelming excitement to be heading back.

2:03pm | heading out

onward and upward. packed the car, flipped on some tunes & drove for what seemed like years.
playlist included but was not limited to:
new york, new york | brand new, the album | discover weekly
didn't do too much reading in the car; i was far too excited.

4:17pm | new haven, ct
hitched a ride on the metro-north commuter rail into the city. it was a 2 hour ride, but it proved to be quite enjoyable. lashing rain outside the window, a yummy read and coffee in hand, and gorgeous tunes. yes on so many levels.
the read: all the light we cannot see  [so far i am love love loving it! definitely living up to all it's hype]
the music: piano

7:01pm | grand central station: new york city, new york
holy moly, me oh my. if any of you guys have watched gossip girl, you know how emphasized and shown this place is in the series. every time i step out of the train and into the terminal, i am immediately transported & basically start to think that i'm one of manhattan's elite. oops.

7:17pm | onward
grabbed a bite to eat and then hopped on the subway to go to our sleeping accommodations on the upper west side.
** if any of you guys are heading into the city and
a) know most/all the places you want to go to and
b) are looking to use the subway system, definitely use this trip planner to do all the brain-work of subway transfers. i cannot stress how easy it is to get turned around once your underground. doing this ahead of time saved a lot of sweat and grey-hair, if you now what i mean. [this app was also helpful.]

7:47pm | hello, house
we arrived at our sleeping arrangements quickly and easily. once checked-in, we dropped our bags off and headed out for a bite to eat. we were right near columbus & broadway so finding yummy places was easy!
8:05pm | eat up
we ended up settling for this restaurant on columbus. but we quick found our way to a starbucks to pick up oooone last pick me up for the day (ie. passion tea lemonade, so refreshing after riding on the hot and stuffy train and subway). we did a bit of browsing around the streets shops before heading home. (jonathan adler, paper source, etc. - how lovely!)
9:11pm |  home-ish
feet up, pj's on, belly full. sleep acquired.

day two | an open house, a lot of coffee, homeward

as quick as it began, it was over!

6:45am | blaring & roaring
the alarm.
a shower.
the outfit - donned.
i was far too tired to think but somehow i managed to put all my clothes on right-side-out AND i managed to line my water-line with eyeliner. impressive.

7:45am | breakfast & people-watching
we definitely woke up before the city-goers. new york city or not, saturday mornings are definitely for lie-ins. not so much getting up with the sun.
either way, we grabbed bagels and coffee and watched life begin to seep into the city for the day. so whimsical.

8:15am | sightseeing
after we finished breakfast we had quite a bit of time before we needed to catch the subway, so we headed down to central park. the morning light was delighful and ever so beautiful.

8:35am | subway rides & morning voices
onto the subway, off of the subway. lots of "hallo!"'s and "why am i up this early"'s. i kept the coffee going. (definitely needed it. 4 hours of sleep was not nearly enough, let me tell you.)

9:01am | arrival & early-bird tours
we arrived at FIT and checked in. with my goodie-bag in tow, Dad and I hopped on one of the early-bird tours with a very chipper tour guide. and just like that, the day had begun.

10:07am | welcoming
FIT did such a good job welcoming their prospective students. The Dean of the school, the head of various departments, the head of admissions, and the leader of the student body all spoke. It was so wonderful to hear their perspective and their bouncing, joyful voices as they talked about why we should choose FIT.

11:13am | school merch & a dorm tour
self-explanatory. totally drool-worthy.
can i move in yet?

12:00pm | info session
this was the highlight of my day! they offered information sessions for each of the majors held at the school. for me, it's advertising and marketing communcations. the man who lead the session was so informative and presented the information in an easy-to-understand way - i was bopping my head in agreement for 95% of it! whoops.

1:05pm | subway rides & bag pick-up
after the session was over, we headed back to the home we stayed in, grabbed our bags, one last starbucks and a quick bite to eat, and then we hopped back on the subway to grand central.

2:44 | homeward bound
2 tickets.
"time to go home, huh?"
"yep. that it is."
and with tired feet and a full heart, the train lulled my mind into a drowsy state. how gorgeous the weekend was.
