a weekend in the city

i'm in love.
i'm genuinely in love.

i know it's cliche and i know i say it far too often but oh my lands: the city that never sleeps has my heart.

day one | travelling & browsing

top (not shown): gap / legging: old navy / shoe: keds
sunglass: jcrew (similar) / jacket: target / jewelry (assortment): forever21

*not shown: innate and overwhelming excitement to be heading back.

2:03pm | heading out

onward and upward. packed the car, flipped on some tunes & drove for what seemed like years.
playlist included but was not limited to:
new york, new york | brand new, the album | discover weekly
didn't do too much reading in the car; i was far too excited.

4:17pm | new haven, ct
hitched a ride on the metro-north commuter rail into the city. it was a 2 hour ride, but it proved to be quite enjoyable. lashing rain outside the window, a yummy read and coffee in hand, and gorgeous tunes. yes on so many levels.
the read: all the light we cannot see  [so far i am love love loving it! definitely living up to all it's hype]
the music: piano

7:01pm | grand central station: new york city, new york
holy moly, me oh my. if any of you guys have watched gossip girl, you know how emphasized and shown this place is in the series. every time i step out of the train and into the terminal, i am immediately transported & basically start to think that i'm one of manhattan's elite. oops.

7:17pm | onward
grabbed a bite to eat and then hopped on the subway to go to our sleeping accommodations on the upper west side.
** if any of you guys are heading into the city and
a) know most/all the places you want to go to and
b) are looking to use the subway system, definitely use this trip planner to do all the brain-work of subway transfers. i cannot stress how easy it is to get turned around once your underground. doing this ahead of time saved a lot of sweat and grey-hair, if you now what i mean. [this app was also helpful.]

7:47pm | hello, house
we arrived at our sleeping arrangements quickly and easily. once checked-in, we dropped our bags off and headed out for a bite to eat. we were right near columbus & broadway so finding yummy places was easy!
8:05pm | eat up
we ended up settling for this restaurant on columbus. but we quick found our way to a starbucks to pick up oooone last pick me up for the day (ie. passion tea lemonade, so refreshing after riding on the hot and stuffy train and subway). we did a bit of browsing around the streets shops before heading home. (jonathan adler, paper source, etc. - how lovely!)
9:11pm |  home-ish
feet up, pj's on, belly full. sleep acquired.

day two | an open house, a lot of coffee, homeward

as quick as it began, it was over!

6:45am | blaring & roaring
the alarm.
a shower.
the outfit - donned.
i was far too tired to think but somehow i managed to put all my clothes on right-side-out AND i managed to line my water-line with eyeliner. impressive.

7:45am | breakfast & people-watching
we definitely woke up before the city-goers. new york city or not, saturday mornings are definitely for lie-ins. not so much getting up with the sun.
either way, we grabbed bagels and coffee and watched life begin to seep into the city for the day. so whimsical.

8:15am | sightseeing
after we finished breakfast we had quite a bit of time before we needed to catch the subway, so we headed down to central park. the morning light was delighful and ever so beautiful.

8:35am | subway rides & morning voices
onto the subway, off of the subway. lots of "hallo!"'s and "why am i up this early"'s. i kept the coffee going. (definitely needed it. 4 hours of sleep was not nearly enough, let me tell you.)

9:01am | arrival & early-bird tours
we arrived at FIT and checked in. with my goodie-bag in tow, Dad and I hopped on one of the early-bird tours with a very chipper tour guide. and just like that, the day had begun.

10:07am | welcoming
FIT did such a good job welcoming their prospective students. The Dean of the school, the head of various departments, the head of admissions, and the leader of the student body all spoke. It was so wonderful to hear their perspective and their bouncing, joyful voices as they talked about why we should choose FIT.

11:13am | school merch & a dorm tour
self-explanatory. totally drool-worthy.
can i move in yet?

12:00pm | info session
this was the highlight of my day! they offered information sessions for each of the majors held at the school. for me, it's advertising and marketing communcations. the man who lead the session was so informative and presented the information in an easy-to-understand way - i was bopping my head in agreement for 95% of it! whoops.

1:05pm | subway rides & bag pick-up
after the session was over, we headed back to the home we stayed in, grabbed our bags, one last starbucks and a quick bite to eat, and then we hopped back on the subway to grand central.

2:44 | homeward bound
2 tickets.
"time to go home, huh?"
"yep. that it is."
and with tired feet and a full heart, the train lulled my mind into a drowsy state. how gorgeous the weekend was.

a summer in the books

hello, gorgeous!

today i thought i'd share with you a compilation of sorts of all the books i've read over the summer. it was a deliciously vibrant 4 months, filled with life and new experiences and a whole lot of words (my own and others).

may (the month of chick-lit)
to all the boys i've loved before - a girl writes letters to her loves as a means of letting them go. seems normal, right? oh, definitely. except that somehow they get sent out to all those people years after the relationships are had. comical and easy to read. also, completely chick-lit.
where'd you go bernadette - a different sort of read. definitely not quality writing, but the story was amusing and had an interesting plot-line. would highly reccomend if you enjoy family novels!
the royal we - mirrors the romance of the duke and duchess of wales, though not entirely the same. follows the unlikely love story between an american commoner and the prince of england. gives you insight into the monarchy whilst still being entertaining. again, not quality writing, but it's worth the read.

june (the one-book month)
the beautiful and damned - this was a meaty read. it follows the story of a young couple on their journey of love.
**i'm normally a fast reader, but this one took a while. once i reached a certain point in the book, the plot slowed down and it was hard to gain momentum again. i started reading it like halfway through june too, hence why there's only one book for this month.

july (the month of non-fiction)
the life-changing magic of tidying up - such a good read. marie kondo goes over all the necessary steps to tidying ones house and life. see my post on it here. 5/5!

the astronauts wives club - non-fiction for once! i wanted to read the full story after watching the pilot of the tv series. definitely an interesting read!

august (the month of feel good reads)
the vacationers - suuuper easy read. follows a family that brings all their life baggage on vacation with them. quite amusing, though definitely not a page-turner.
last letter from your lover - if you like romance & good writing, jojo moyes is definitely for you. this book emphasizes loves timelessness & follows a couple through thick and thin, life's up's and downs for 40 years. i honestly think they should make a movie out of this book.
is everyone hanging out without me? and other concerns - read this in one night. highly reccomended. read my review here.
. . . . .
i'm 95% sure that i remembered all the books i read this summer. for all i know there could be a few stragglers if so, rest assured, these were definitely the most memorable!
books provide their own little adventure in the pages and provide such happiness and depth to living.
read on, baby.
see you next wednesday!
until then, catch me on my instagram.

ring and earring box

This project has been on the to-do list for months, and I finally rounded up the materials and made it. This is the best way to store slim rings and studs in a classy and simple display.  The materials are cheap, and it's quick and fun to put together.  Enjoy!

you need:
a shallow box
felt of any color
thin fabric
hot glue
ruler

how to
measure your boxes width.

cut rectangles this width that fit into the box.

roll the rectangles into logs and glue these into place.

add the thin fabric over the rolls, using a ruler to push the fabric in the gaps.

add glue to tack into place.

pop in your rings and earrings in and viola.

I left a section with no rolls for bigger earrings and rings.

my accessory drawer.

I love how this looks and works, and I already had all the materials laying around the house.  It looks like something a boutique would use, and it's incredibly functional.

tissue box cover

This summer, while cleaning and decorating my room, I noticed how tissue boxes were totally cramping my style.  I'll be honest, it's a minor issue to have, yet there's a quick fix- with a roll of tape and a cereal box, you can make a super simple pop-over cover for your tissues.

As with all my DIYs, the directions are pretty vague, but the main principle is there: crafting a cover to slide over the existing box of tissues with a hole at the top to tug tissues through.  I used electrical tape (which I've blogged about countless times), giving my box a modern black and tan look.  With the basic box pattern, it wouldn't be hard to use scrapbook paper, colorful tape or magazines to customize them to fit your room.

trace a tad outside the line of the box so there's room
you'll need 4 sides and a top
trace a circle on the top for the hole.  i used the tape roll, but I wish I had used something bigger
tape the four sides together inside the box so the tape doesn't show.
tape around the opening and tape the top on. (rest the top on the box so it's easier to tape)
decorate as you please & that's all

This took me about 20 minutes to complete.  Flip on some netflix or youtube and just make it.  It's reusable, recycles cereal box paper board, and makes your room look more put-together.  It's honestly a mess-free project perfect for beginners.

Written while grooving to Lana's just-released Honeymoon album.
